Onshore Wind Power Driving Nova Scotia’s Clean Energy Transition

Nova Scotia is harnessing its powerful and consistent winds to generate clean, affordable electricity that stabilizes power rates, strengthens energy security, and reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels. Onshore wind energy has emerged as the province’s most cost-effective source of electricity and a cornerstone of its transition to a greener energy grid.

What Is Onshore Wind?

Onshore wind energy is produced by tall turbines placed in areas with strong, reliable wind speeds. These turbines capture kinetic energy from the wind and convert it into electricity. With some of the best wind conditions in the world, Nova Scotia is uniquely positioned to lead in wind energy development.

Onshore wind is already the largest source of clean electricity in the province and will continue to play a major role as Nova Scotia works toward its goal of achieving 80 per cent clean electricity by 2030.

Benefits of Onshore Wind

Onshore wind offers a wide range of benefits to Nova Scotia, including:

  • Clean energy: Wind power produces no greenhouse gas emissions. One megawatt of wind energy can power up to 350 homes and displace more than 2,500 tonnes of coal emissions annually.
  • Lower energy costs: Estimated at approximately 5.3 cents per kilowatt hour, onshore wind is the most affordable source of new electricity and provides long-term price stability.
  • Energy independence: Locally generated power reduces dependence on imported fuels and improves energy security.
  • Economic growth: Wind projects create local jobs, generate municipal tax revenue, attract rural investment, and support emerging industries such as green hydrogen.

Nova Scotia’s Wind Energy Advantage

Nova Scotia continues to lead in wind energy development due to several key advantages:

  • World-class wind resources: Some regions experience capacity factors exceeding 50 per cent, making projects highly efficient.
  • Government commitment: The Clean Power Plan targets the addition of 1 gigawatt of new onshore wind capacity by 2030, bringing the provincial total to 2 gigawatts.
  • Indigenous leadership: Many wind projects are developed in partnership with Mi’kmaw communities, ensuring shared economic benefits and local participation.

Building a Successful Wind Project

Developing an onshore wind farm requires careful planning and collaboration. Key considerations include:

  • Assessing wind resources to identify optimal locations
  • Ensuring access to transmission infrastructure
  • Conducting environmental assessments to protect wildlife and ecosystems
  • Engaging with Mi’kmaw communities and local residents
  • Using advanced turbine technology with taller towers and longer blades

While onshore wind provides significant benefits, the province recognizes concerns related to noise and environmental impact. Turbine sound levels are regulated at a maximum of 40 decibels — comparable to the sound of a household refrigerator — and strict rules govern project siting and operation.

Support, Training, and Future Growth

The Government of Nova Scotia has introduced multiple programs to support onshore wind development, including a 2022 rate-based procurement that approved four wind projects totaling 306 megawatts of new capacity under 25-year contracts.

Additional initiatives include the Green Choice Program, future procurement rounds, and workforce development opportunities through training programs, industry partnerships, and clean economy grants and scholarships.

Together, these efforts position onshore wind as a central driver of Nova Scotia’s clean energy future, delivering economic, environmental, and energy security benefits for decades to come.
